[_] Future of flash? Anon 3467429 Will the SWF file format ever go obsolate? I hope not, but all things must come and go and flash is pretty much dead already. If so, how would we be able to preserve flashes so that they can be played in like idk 2040 or something? Marked for deletion (old).
>> [_] ta-kun 3467431 >># Please don't be mean to flan >flash player is kill in browser >flash player can be used in older browsers >as long as you don't have a flash player from the past 2 years or so you should be able to play everything fine >flash based anime studios still use swfs alongside premier >there is a rust based web plugin called ruffle that is planned to be able to run flash online without any software the exact same way as flash >/f/ is running ruffle, as well as a few more flash websites >You will one day be able to have it as a proper plugin, so far it can only support up to as2 partially >some projects have a huge piles of flashes you can download and a player to play them with. >I'm not gonna stop using flash until I find a competent video editor that does exactly what flash does without the limitations, even if I do I may still use flash to figure out timing. The program is so damn nice to use that it is hard to complain about it.
>> [_] Anon 3467433 >># I wish it'd become obsolete so there would be another software that would be much better optimized and would allow more video containers than .flv >inb4 you can import mp4 too through an external program or using black magic sure
>> [_] ta-kun 3467437 >># Considering how perfect flash was, and how amazing this software would be tweaked to modern times, it is really hard to look at what adobe did and not feel like they bought flash just to kill it.
>> [_] Anon 3467444 This is so sad. I'm really grateful that we have Flashpoint to keep Flash alive for all future generations.
>> [_] ta-kun 3467445 >># anon you can use a damn flash player and downloaded files.
>> [_] Anon 3467465 most of the major American banks are still using mainframe systems tech doesn't die, it Franksteins
>> [_] Anon 3467475 >># the future of flash is FutureSplash!
>> [_] Anon 3467487 >># >adobe did and not feel like they bought flash just to kill it. yeah they basically did. """security issues""" and "we dont have the resources/staff to maintain it" is bullshit. They're a billion dollar company that sells $500 paint programs to engineers and graphic designers. I'm pretty sure they can afford to pay one /f/atguy to sit in a cubicle and keep flash updated and secure. Adobe, Google, Microsoft, Apple etc all wanted Flash dead because with every new flash cartoon that gets made, it's revenue Youtube are missing out on. For every Flash Game made, its revenue Apple and Google are missing out on. Flash dying put us into Web 3.0, where 90% of the internet is 3 companies and everything's heavily monitored and un-fun. It's gotten so bad that you cant even say Hitler's name on the internet or you get permabanned from every platform for hate speech.
>> [_] Anon 3467488 >># not him but i've tried downloading like 5 different "standalone flash players" that "work in 2021" and none of them work properly.
>> [_] Anon 3467489 >># Of course I can, but many websites hosting them are going down now when many users won't bother to play Flashes the harder way. I meant that Flash files will always work, if you put a little time into that, but their sources will be slowly shutting down and many of the flashes will just disappear.
>> [_] Anon 3467490 >># Oh wow, didn't think of this being a possible reason. But for real, the security concerns are very valid, it's very easy to make a malicious SWF. But in that case, Adobe should have made it more secure, if just by disabling the dangerous features (that would kill some games, but the vast majority of offline titles would remain untouched).
>> [_] Anon 3467492 >># >>I'm not gonna stop using flash until I find a competent video editor that does exactly what flash does without the limitations, even if I do I may still use flash to figure out timing. The program is so damn nice to use that it is hard to complain about i I think we should retroactively call the thing that makes swf's Animate.
>> [_] Anon 3467495 >># >># >It's gotten so bad that you cant even say Hitler's name on the internet or you get permabanned from every platform for hate speech. This. And mostly this. The killing of flash did have jack shit to do with 'muh security' and all to do with making the consumers pay for games from apple. Have any of you seen the free phone games out there? They are literally a advert shit hole that make the most shitty hobby made flash game look like a master peace. Apple simply hated the idea of not getting payed for free games, anyone with a browser can go to an website and play some games. The bullshit about flash not being optimized for mobile in the iPhone era is shit. I mean most games used the mouse only and it would not be hard to have a mobile/phone section of a website or a website dedicated to only mobile games (no keyboard input or keyboard optional). It was a money grab nothing more, apple controls the store ecosystem and can ban and demand money from whoever it wants, flash was impossible to control so it was banned. And yes it was all about games the 'muh better video codecs' is nonsense since there is no real replacement for flash games. >># >Oh wow, didn't think of this being a possible reason. What did you think was the reason? And how old are you? The moment when apple started shit with flash it was obvious to everyone that its about banning flash games.
>> [_] Anon 3467500 >># >What did you think was the reason? And how old are you? I'm turning 20 and I thought that the main reason really is the security concern. Also, while I fricking hate Apple's business model (pay for everything or go fuck yourself), I'm not sure if shutting down Flash is the most efficient way to eliminate free content. Many games are being converted to HTML5 and other open standards, which seems to be even harder to regulate than Flash since it's open-source and pretty much anyone can use it. But yeah, I'm far from an expert on this.
>> [_] Anon 3467502 I think the future is that flash is going to dim out to the few places on the Internet that still support it(such as here). People will get bored and slowly move on to other things. But I have an idea for extending this slow death. Interaction between the flash and the underlying forum! Basically, let's say a swf game has level editor, or a sequencer/tracker makes songs. The swf could export its content(level/song/etc.) in base64-encoded string(with header identifying what it is) that can be posted on the swf's page, and people can share home-made content. Of course, this should compliment regular file export. Or I dunno, the swf could be one half of the experience, and the thread the other half, dunno, something crazy. Just throwing this out there. Someone might like it.
>> [_] Anon 3467509 >># >I'm turning 20 Thanks for the info on this. You must understand that the media is telling you lies and you don't know how the past generation lived. I love to tell you about the past. I think everyone understood (not media whores telling you bullshit) that apple killed flash because it allowed for free games then others jumped on this insanity and here we are today. > I thought that the main reason really is the security concern This is what the media will tell you. This is the same bullshit line they always say. If they gave a fuck about security concerns then they remove java from all machines however they do not since oracle shills its shit hard. Also everything is unsafe and full of security holes. So that's not an argument. If they wanted to make flash safe they sandbox the plugin whats the worse it can do then? Nothing. The idea was to kill flash so the app store is the only place for you to get games. >converted to HTML5 LOL is it? Since when is HTML 5 a programing language (serious question)? Also name the website where you can get these HTML 5 games.... Aha I think I have proven my point. 1) The games of the past where EVERYWHERE ! Tons of websites with games in flash. This simply vanished. To give you a idea do you know these animated adverts that are about some game? In the flash era there is a 80% chance that thing literally is a game you can play ! Not some movie A REAL GAME ! I remember websites having a punch Osama games on the side that literally track your stats and have a win condition. Hows that for something interesting?! 2) Also I recommend you look into the Animate software itself its super easy to make games etc. Its so easy that there was tons of flash games all over the place. >HTML5 How many of them are real java script games and how many of them are literally rufus playing a flash file ? 1/2
>> [_] Anon 3467510 >># >># 2/2 Remember this all of the history you get are MSM lies and corporate bullshit. You will not find anything worth while in history books or reading articles by media whores from today or back in the day telling you about these times. They are literally saying bullshit and corporate nonsense to pretend that they give you any knowledge. sure you get the meaningless factoids who is president or when a war started however they will not tell you how we really lived. Flash was a big part of that and it was glorious. All the media will tell you is >Hur durr flash so unstable remove flash. Literally no one will tell you about the instant interactivity flash has given to us and how we loved it. I also give you this fact back in the day you could simply download the SWF file for many website by saving the web page and have it locally I don't see how this is possible today. Also we did have our edgy humor if you want to see the culture and humor of my generation watch the flash cartoon retarded animal babies or pico's school. To give you an idea penises showed up simply because not erotic or anything simply penis. Or you can get porn in there, no fucken warning signs or anything. We did have limits however it was the perfect youth culture, we did make these cartoons for ourselves today you are back to boomer times where big corporations dictate what you are allowed to have in your media and games. There was traditional TV back in the day, what attracted us to flash was that creators made what they wanted and it was not corporate controlled.
>> [_] Anon 3467511 >># >># There are HTML5 games, but they're inherently tied to a site. Part of what made flash awesome was that it was a self-contained format, files easily repostable(like one would share a picture or a webm). Try that with HTML5 now.
>> [_] Anon 3467514 >># >Part of what made flash awesome was that it was a self-contained format, files easily repostable(like one would share a picture or a webm). Try that with HTML5 now. Exactly. >There are HTML5 games, but they're inherently tied to a site. I still doubt they are written in HTML more like a container to link to what the server runs or something.
>> [_] Anon 3467515 >># More like amalgam of JS frameworks or maybe compiled to WASM, with game resources on hosting server. It's running in browser, yes. But it's not going anywhere(not self-contained). HTML5(HTML+JS+WASM) can do some nifty things these days, do not underestimate! But experience is hit and miss, depending on your browser's support and performance. Also depending on devbloat that is taken for granted(see JS frameworks). Also, I think JS engines are getting better at JIT these days, compared to flash(whose JIT optimizations only stretch as far as the function?). But of course, that doesn't stop said optimizations from being further taken for granted and nullified by devbloat.
>> [_] Anon 3467528 >># I'm just happy to see that degenerate anime cunt hanging herself
>> [_] Anon 3467529 >># I just came back onto /f/ after a few months. I'm glad that somehow them implemented a flash player. I wasn't technically proficient enough to get them to play on my browser.
>> [_] Anon 3467535 >># HTML5 not being very portable is viewed as a feature, because the people behind it are cynical and sad. They will stop at nothing to make republishing or sharing "unpleasant" content difficult, controllable, traceable. Services like Unity WebGL and various HTML5 libraries let you convert C# or another language into WebAssembly, and generates a HTML file to serve as a hub. These services can be uploaded to a very narrow number of sites supporting open file embedding as a zip file, with the HTML file acting as the core directory, and the rest of the zip being (nearly uncompressed) raw resources. This has obvious, massive disadvantages to this strategy, but they can be worked around if the site is clever. In a strange sense, modern itch.io has more in common with Geocities/Neocities than it does with Newgrounds. This also answers the question of "what site has semi-portable or portable HTML5," itch.io does. You can play hundreds of perfectly good flash-game like games in your browser, of varying levels of quantity. I don't think people have mostly realized that, due to modern itch.io still having a shit UI geared towards indie game sales, and not an "arcade" or "community" format like the big flash game sites had.
