[_] Steam will stop supporting win7 in 2024 Anonymous 05/07/23(Sun)09:07:55 No.3494927
Do you think it will have a killswitch just like flash? Will people find a way to go around this?

what exactly does "supporting win7 mean"? what special tweaks has been required by Valve to make
the steam exe run on win7?

As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows
8.1 operating systems. After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of
Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through
Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.
This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome,
which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam
will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.
Although support won't end until 2024, we strongly encourage all Windows 7/8/8.1 users to update
sooner rather than later. Microsoft ended security updates and technical support for Windows 7 in
January 2020 and for Windows 8.1 in January 2023. Computers running these operating systems, when
connected to the internet, are susceptible to new malware and other exploits which will not be
patched. That malware can cause your PC, Steam and games to perform poorly or crash. That malware
can also be used to steal the credentials for your Steam account or other services.

I control c'd this from somewhere and it seems to be working so far because steam asks me
everyday to restart to apply their next update.
I'll be fucked if some company can tell I have to change my entire OS to use a basic ass web
browser. Eat my ass gaben
There are two ways:
You can either add the following commands to the desktop shortcut of your Steam:
-noverifyfiles -nobootstrapupdate -skipinitialbootstrap -norepairfiles -overridepackageurl
(right-click the shortcut, go to properties, copy the line into the target line, leaving a space
behind the quotation marks, you find there)
Or you can create the following file in your Steam folder:
Steam.cfg
and put inside the following: BootStrapperInhibitAll=Enable
Both methods are proven to work. You will still download updates, but they will not be installed
at launch. There are still users around, who keep Steam going on Windows XP and Vista this way,
although it has been disabled half a year ago. :-)

>will no longer run on those versions of Windows
WHY
>is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome
oh... well fuck that shit then, stop using google chrome? valve invented steam deck because they
were worried about microsoft taking away their business, why continue to depend on google?
>future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in
Windows 10 and above
like what exactly? sounds like bullshit
i'm on win10 myself but im tired of companies bricking old stuff for no proper reason. windows 7
is not that much different from windows 10. google's simply deciding that chrome should no longer
work on win7 and steam is simply deciding to play along with whatever google wants.

>a killswitch
It will probably be more annoying than that. They will just make it unplayable on purpose and
claim it to be the fault of the OS.
Some shit I noticed with new games/apps on Windows 8.1:
>camera pans down until you're at an unplayable angle (encountered thrice)
>menus won't let you select the option you want (twice)
>check for OS version number on start and refuse to start the app (Adobe products)

>bricking old stuff for no proper reason
Jewgle has been trying to monopolise JavaScript to get total control over the web. There used to
be three major players that fought over JS: Microsoft (Internet Explorer), Google (Chrome) and
Mozilla (Firefox). Microsoft threw the towel and switched to Google Chrome with Edge and Mozilla
has been bought out with "donations" and further weakend with "diversity" and corruption, lol.
Now they just need to kill all old versions of Chrome to get free reign over JS.
On the bright side: They will finally stop making programming in JS retarded on purpose and maybe
clean up a little.
On the not so bright side: The old web will probably die. Fuck.

1. It's not a way around it, only going with it
2. I'm not going to switch to objectively worse OS only because steam jews want it

takes time and money to iron out bugs and develop new features
old systems are used by fewer and fewer people
makes no sense to invest time and money if payoff is minimal

I haven't used any Microsoft OS on my personal computer since Windows 7. What even are are
functional differences between 8, 10 and 11? I can never tell what version is installed when
using a Windows computer.
The only thing I remember is that 8 had that godawful tablet-like UI.

Win7 has that vista gui with the see-thru window tabs; Win is far more minimalistic and simple.
also theyve put most of the stuff you remember behind a search function near the start menu.
And the start menu is a little diff but it could be my shitty computer idk.
I would get a newer PC but not to play older games like wizardry 8 GTA3 on PC, (fuck that.)

Not intentionally, its an online service so its doomed to have its plug pulled one day. Once
Steam becomes unprofitable Valve will have no choice but to shut its servers down.
I remember Gabe saying that if such a thing occurs, they will release some dlls for download
before total shutdown so you can still play your games. This was when Steam was only for Valve
games though, Im not sure what they would do these days.

that's the point though, no time and money investment is needed

>workaround
Just pirate it. The crack just btfos steam. No need to run drm.
Nothings stopping you from still buying the game through some web browser, then torrenting it on
win7 and never install steam.

Chrome and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.
