Best opening song ever though.) Partly because Japan has become stuck in a loop of making endless slice-of-life and isekai shows we've seen a hundred times before.

I mean, people fell in love with anime grill since the dawn of time, but now they are exclusively catering to the moe and can't let a funny and interesting character speak for itself. It's like being attractive became SRS BSZNS for a non existing virtual character. You can't just make something goofy. Really the best example of this being wrong was the unforseen success of KonoSuba which comes close to this. People loved the waifus because they were flawed and had character (even if just clichee), not despite it. Man, I think mid to late 2000s hits like K-ON, Haruhi, etc. have destroyed 80% of what anime was for good. Add SAO some years later and now we will only have slice-of-life and isekai for the rest of days, like you said. The saddest part is, this is where the money is and everytime someone creates something different they border on becoming broke because of it.

Kids nowadays care about enjoying their waifus and kawaii stuff and it's a safe bet. You don't need to worry about making a fun or different world, just draw cute girls.
