Then it does it's job. I'ts supposed to catch anyone's attention at any time. something about the
sound covers up any background noise in the area. it is an alarm, after all.

Yeah. High and low frequency square waves will cut through pretty much any bullshit on account of
their wide spectral signature. I use a similar (but less grating) noise for my IM notifications.

This. But yeah, it's right up there with air raid sirens. An air raid siren went off near my
house once without notice. At 3AM. I sat straight up in bed thinking both that the Luftwaffe was
already overhead, and that the nukes had just reentered the atmosphere, and nearly shit my bed
before I fully woke up.

To reiterate: the noise is supposed to do two things. 1) be heard over any other sounds going on
around you and 2) alert you to life-threatening danger.
So yes, it's both piercing and spooky because it is a DANGER NOISE. Like shrieks of terror or
growling dogs or hissing snakes. It is a signal of potential disaster and hurty-ness.

For the non-Americans, most Americans know this sound as a television alert system preceded by a
voice-over stating "this is only a test" during calm weather, and when bad weather or otherwise
necessary notices (earthquakes, etc) you may hear this, alerting you to pay attention to the
upcoming news. There's a similar sound for radio transmissions, but not quite the same.

i remember living in the south-east for a few years and tornados were prominent around there,
especially severe thunderstorms which happened every other day. there would be often warnings
like that, and a red ticker at the bottom of the tv screen. I remember having two TV's on on
different channels and a laptop with live doppler feed when there was a tornado that was suppose
to be really close by. that sound was frightening as a child and even today i shit brix

The sound and warnings really make it seem like the danger is in your fuckin backyard.

My huge condo building has 130dB fire alarms. The first time they went off at 2 a.m., I turned to
look at my gf, and she was literally levitating off the bed. I just happened to gain
consciousness while she was in mid-alarm fright. It was awesome.
