Interesting. Hell if that kind of energy source could actually be harnessed then by all means,
why not go for it. The problem with any alternative energy is people want to totally abandon the
use of oil, coal, nuclear power, etc. and rely on unreliable sources.
There's no question we should be looking for new ways to produce energy but I think we need to
become independent on energy first and at the same time develop new means of efficient energy.
Why am I posting this in /f/?

We can't be independent of energy needs, development consumes energy. Nobody is advocating
returning to neolithic energy usage levels here, we're simply trying more efficient with what
energy we get.
Iceland uses a hell of a lot of geothermal power, but even they don't harness whole volcanoes. I
have no idea how you could do so, but I suppose it might be a scaled-up version of existing
geothermal power plants, which boils water into steam for steam generators.
As an aside, how could this project work today? The U.S. doesn't have the engineering or
sociological know-how anymore...

He just said it wouldn't be political. The people are educated enough to think for themselves.
AKA NO GOVERNMENT

People HAVE to be governed. All it takes is one "free thinking" asshole to go, "hey... what's
stopping me from beating that guy up and taking his stuff?" And the answer will be "nothing"

Other than the realization that whatever he has, you could also have at a whim?
Not much.
Me? I'll be in an abandoned missile silo, growing my own weed, making my own booze, and generally
being the same misanthropic asshole I'd be in any other "advanced" culture.
Mind the mines. explosives are not racist. They do not discriminate.

volcanoes are cool idea, but oil companies will do everything to stop that from happening...

I love how ideas from people like this have so many wonderful ideas, yet. None happen, none will
ever happen.
The only time such a thing may happen possibly is when the entire world is in trouble caused by
something not done by humans.
I don't believe in all the 2012 shit but ya'know I hope something HUGE does happen, maybe it'll
knock some very much needed sense into everyone just as we're about to die into oblivion or
whatever does happen... if anything...

Too bad it doesn't really work that way. Tapping a volcano presents two huge problems...first,
you risk having your powerplant destroyed in a volcanic eruption; second you need a way to
transport that power to places other than the immediate vicinity of the mountain.
Batteries are heavy, and you lose about 20% of your energy input by the time you get to output.
More if you let them sit too long.
You can't just run cables either. By the time you got all that power over a copper cable from,
say Hawaii to the mainland there would be almost nothing left. Even the best conductors have some
resistance, and over a super long distance like that, you're fucked.

What about drilling into the earth's crust to obtain heat?
