  Actually, they bashed its head into the ground to break the animal's spine / neck quickly to
  minimize the pain. Skinning alive produces the best quality fur and the fur's value drops
  exponentially based on it's completeness. The animal being hung up was still alive and could
  probably feel very little of the actual skinning, its limbs moving out of reflex from the "pain"
  of the that the brain wasn't receiving.

  That said, those guys were most likely poachers, although very good at skinning.
