ok i wrote this some time ago, in response to this thread:
http://swfchan.net/2/XV5TD6T.shtml
i dont know why this always happens to me but when i pressed the post button the thread had 404'd.
here's what i wrote before (instead of "itt:" you may read "in before" if you wish):
iit: people thinking the balls are 3d and not just 2d
displaying 2d images is a very simple task for the computer. look at those reflections, they
arent really reflections at all. the drawing distance is very short also, look at how soon the
"blurred balls" comes in (not real blurring i guess). make this with 10000 cubes, with real
reflections and with good drawing distance, then maybe it can rival ps3 :P
not speaking ill of actionscript 3, i think its awesome - you can actually code mod music players
in flash now! just explaining how this flash can perform so well

The balls themselves may not be 3d, they're just billboarded textures, but there *are* 3d
transformations applied to them, and I mean, the end result looks fucking fantastic...
also I'd note that the blurring in/out is probably more expensive than just fucking drawing
everything, just sayin...
