On top of that it's one function is to play video games, nothing more or less. The computer functions as much more than a gaming station and therefore has to keep up with the rest of technology as it expands and improves. Now we can think of this. Back in 2008 I bought a PS3 and still own it now. Every year new games are released for the PS3 and some are eventually ported to the PC. And I bought GTA IV for my Playstaton back in 2008. Its been 5 years since then and while I don't own GTA V yet, I can rest assured knowing that even after 5 years I can pickup a copy of GTA V for my PS3 and it will run smoothly. But had you owned a top of the line PC back then, it may only run GTA V on medium or minimum settings now. Forcing you to upgrade for the latter or suffer lag.

Your games are stuck on that console, and with the high failure rate of the last generation thats a real problem when it becomes impossible to play your games because your console failed and is no longer supported.
