>> [_] Anon 3311746 >># >mingling with people who are basically fresh out of high school. the trick is that you don't actually have to do this. Not to any meaningful degree, anyway. Younger kids, they're mostly going to be dicks to you. You should just accept that as fact. What I've found from the older generations going back to college, is that they often have familys and jobs to be getting back to, and don't have the free time to dick around on campus that the average college student has in excess. Kids fresh out of high school are more or less still in their diapers. College is a glorified daycare for them. Only after their junior years do most of them get their shit together and realize how real everything is. This also means that older students are less likely to fuck around in general, and more likely to be a reliable partner in any group situations.

From what I remember, you need a space station with diameter in triple digit meters. Forgot the exact size. And yes, it is exactly the same. Gravity and Acceleration are completely the same thing to the body. When you get to those triple digits, the rotational effects become nil. The issue is it would be too expensive for NASAs shitty little budget, and ESA. The only ones with any hope of doing it would be China. [_] You'll never go to space. Anon 3052849 A human being first escaped the earth's atmosphere and orbited around our planet almost fifty years ago. 20 years after that the Space Shuttle Columbia was launched and remained for orbit for over a year before crashing. Over 30 years ago, the Apollo 11 made its first successful trip to our moon. Space has always seemed to us like the ultimate form of escapism. We want to imagine ourselves drifting in the quiet void, looking down at a departed planet where we left the rest of our problems. But anything near what we could achieve that with may never be itself achieved in our lifetimes. All these past space excursions have only gotten us so far in the massiveness of space that we can narrow down to one of countless galaxies. The time, coordination, risks, resources, and everything that goes into our attempts to explore even a fraction of that space is huge. For how much it takes for one of only a few successful expeditions, how could we manage any kind of efficient commercial space travel? We may not even have enough left on earth to reach that. As much as you might wish years from now you're sitting in your own little tin can far above the world, it's only a hope. We're a species that dreams too big for our own capacity, and it's truly sad. You'll never go to space. Marked for deletion (old).
>> [_] Anon 3052868 >># Dude, is that Legend of Dragoon, near the start of the game, she's playing?

>> [_] Anon 3052874 >># looks cosy
>> [_] Anon 3052875 >># That's okay. There's plenty left to explore on Earth, and one can just as easily drift aimlessly in a vast void alone and away from their problems on the ocean.
>> [_] Anon 3052879 >># Space does look beautiful. Have you ever seen Planetes? Made me wish that I could go up there. But at the same time, it's a scary place. Things go wrong sometimes and you might not be able to survive them. There's no natural gravity, no air, and if your craft fails spectacularly you will die. Frankly speaking, people were never made to be in space, and space was never made to accommodate them. A lot of that series, Planetes, talks about humans love affair with space. Towards the end, there's an astronaut character named Yuri (I think it was) who raises an interesting point. He asks an aspiring rocket engineer about the border of space. The engineer begins to rattle off figures about how at such-and-such an altitude, the atmosphere thins out a lot, but Yuri cuts him off. There's no black-and-white separation between space and atmosphere, he says, not really: the atmosphere simply fades away gradually. Which is true, empirically speaking. It's as gray a line as there can be, so who can really say where space ends and where it begins? I'm probably butchering that, but I found it kind of oddly touching. I don't know, but I think if you like thinking about things like what you wrote here, OP, I think you might like the series a lot. It has a lot to do with people's incessant desire to explore the unknown and dangerous, just because they can. It's a remarkable anime. You should all check it out if you like this, honestly. Anyway, thanks for posting this. Goodnight, everybody.

That sort of mentality was instilled in me when I was a kid, when people usually have all sorts of wild dreams to look forward to when they get out of school. It makes me feel a little better knowing that others still have hope for the future too.

>> [_] Anon 3044932 >># i always find it calming
>> [_] Anon 3044936 I find it to be both calming and depressing. The music is nice, but I play games to explore scifi worlds and shit. It depresses me that someone several hundred years can waste as much time as we when they have a god damn space ship!
>> [_] Anon 3044951 >># space is big, so big that it takes a long time to go from planet to planet. Thus, in the future, people in space might have lots of time to waste. Also, because space is big, ping times can be HUGE.
>> [_] Anon 3044971 >># see, for me the depressing part is realizing that even once we get space ships, it'll be just as boring if not more so out there as it is here. space is just empty void. exoplanets are barren, markedly inhospitable rocks. stars are pretty, but if you've seen one you've seen them all. There's nothing exciting out there we don't already have here. All the "coolness" of sci-fi settings comes from the fantastical (nonrealistic) elements, or from things we created, which would be common-place household items or at best for that settting's inhabitants. An iphone is egregiously mundane to you, a first-world inhabitant of the 21st century, even if to someone from medieval europe, it would be a wonderous invaluable artifact, something that can access a database with nearly all collected human knowledge, that can contact anyone within a global network just by having the right routing number, and can display and vocalize events previously recorded or that are hypothetical and previously designed, and can even do so in an interactive manner, allowing for moment by moment manipulation of time, or in some cases, as part of an elaborate game-like structure, which almost seems a fanciful waste of such an amazing device... The only thing implausible or unreasonable about this picture as a future occurrence is that she's playing a PS1 game. You probably don't play commodore 64 titles very often (unless you're from /vr/). It'd probably be a similar case. She'd instead likely be playing something more modern by her days standards. But maybe she is a /vr/ of her day

I mean, I'd love to actually go out to space if I was guaranteed survival or something, but living there long-term would probably be boring as fuck. That being said, if there were aliens and shit like Star Wars/Cowboy Bebop/etc, I'd get off of Earth the first fucking chance I get. That would be pretty fucking neat.
