The remake maybe didn't go into the cursed earth and all the crazy shit that goes on but they got Dread as a Character spot on. Fucking problem with having someone like Stallone or another big name in a move is you need to make them the center piece (not the character they portray the actor themselves). In the whole run of the comic I don't think he was portrayed with out a helmet once, but sure enough 5 minutes into the original its all "Look at me its Silvester Stallone.

The studios that own the rights to those charas wanna hold onto them. Sony finally hit the jackpot when marvel/disney gave into joss and let him get rights to spiderman. This was a really good bit of info though. Up in alaska, we used to have film subsidies, but couple things happend. First off, several stupid reality TV shows were taking advantage of those tax breaks, and one particular douchbag who makes the baby einstien movies totally raped the tax credit thing. And then the oil prices dropped out, along with with oil companies pushing to hold onto a super tax break law, which has cost the state literally billions. As a result, money and support for movie tax credits up here fully dried up.

As for Dredd being a flop, I love Karl Urban's work (really wish Almost Human stuck around), and I think all the actors and actresses in Dredd did a good job. However, the writing in my opinion wasn't very good and so doing a great job when the writing is crap isn't very effective.
